Sophia A. Nelson is a national columnist, a commentator for major television networks, and a public speaker on key issues related to race, politics, and gender. A regular on CNN, MSNBC, and Fox News, Nelson provides the same highly sought after insights on these networks that landed her regular contributor status for The Washington Post, CNN Opinion, NPR, and Theroot.com.

As one of few African-American women in a number of her circles, Nelson felt compelled to write her first book, “Redefined”, which is a critical expose about the lives of professional black women in the 21st century. The highly anticipated book is scheduled to be released in the spring of 2011 and surveys over 1,000 individuals from various racial and economic backgrounds about their experiences with professional black women. The data is compelling and serves as the foundation for the riveting advice and encompassing vision for professional black women Nelson articulates so well in this book.

Nelson’s professional roots began in politics where she served as United States House of Representatives Committee Counsel, and as a Defense Industry Lobbyist with the “Top 25” nationally ranked law firm of Holland & Knight LLP. She is admitted to practice as an attorney in New Jersey, Washington, D.C. and before the United States Supreme Court. She began her legal career in 1994 as a State Regulatory Counsel & Business Advisor to New Jersey Governor Christine Todd Whitman (R-NJ).

Sophia speaks on topics ranging from workplace retention and advancement strategies for women of color, to relationships issues, work/life balance, spirituality, and career transformation.

Currently, Sophia serves as Chairman of the Board of iask, Inc., an organization dedicated to the relational, emotional, spiritual, career, and health concerns of professional black women. Sophia earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science (Minor in Africana Studies) from San Diego State University. She earned her Juris Doctorate Degree from American University-Washington College of Law. She is also a proud member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. (Xi Omega Graduate Chapter).
